"If I Had A Rocket Launcher" by Bruce Cockburn

1985 / #88

Rate Your Music score: 3.7 out of 5!

First things first: MTV always mispronounced the name of this bespectacled Canadian folk rock singer-songwriter. It's "ko-burn." It's not pronounced the way it's spelled.

I had forgotten about this lost hit for many years, until recently when YouTube yanked the video for it as too "violent." Bruce wrote the song after an Oxfam-sponsored visit to camps for Guatemalan refugees in Mexico. The camps had been attacked by Guatemalan military helicopters.

YouTube recently pulled the video even though MTV aired it without any problems at all in 1985. The video included real footage of events in Guatemala that inspired the song. But Bruce said the song "is not a call to arms. This is a cry."

This song is not to be confused with "If I Had $1000000" by the Barenaked Ladies. However, when the Barenakeds performed their song in concert, they often inserted the "Some son of a bitch would die" line from Bruce's lost hit.
